cay, key

Arawakan cairi island (Albury 1975: 5), Island Carib acráera idem (Taylor 1977:20); OED's European origin seems mistaken] n. a low, sandy islet: 1789 The smaller islands, or (as they are called) Keys (Anon. 1). 1832 Capt. Cay is the current spelling in the Bahamas. The customary U.S. spelling is key, which is obsolete in the Bahamas.
