lye barrel

[cf. LYE WATER] n. a barrel for ashes: 1976 A "lye barrel" was. . . water tight, half-filled with water. Into this barrel was thrown the ashes from the wood stove that was generally used. These ashes gave the water a sharpness that caused it to lather easily with the "octagon soap" (Eneas 3). Set lye barrel, put in ashes, then water (Eleu.). (Gen.)
