Boiling hole

[cf. BOIL 2] n. a deep hole in the sea floor with surging fresh water: 1910 The boiling hole was about a foot under water at low tide. . . when the tide was rising outside, the clear sea water could be distinctly seen ascending (Northrop 35). 1976 Boiling holes, where fresh water surges up under the sea, show that in places there is a connection underground between the land and the sea through which fresh water can flow out at certain states of the tide (Evans 8).
