/búgamàn/ [cf. OED bogy phantom causing fright; also Brit. dial. boogyman (Orton L64), US dial. boogerman W3] n. a phantom evoked to frighten children: 1977 Mama said, "Look out for the Bugga Man. I asked a relative who is 56 and was born and raised in Exuma about this word he stated that this was used to refer to a ghost. It would be used to scare younger children. "Watch da bougaman get you!"
