tin-tub bass

n. a musical instrument; see the quot.: 1978 The tin tub bass consists of a wooden stick, often a broomstick, about four feet in length, set vertically in a metal wash tub, which acts as a resonator. A string, usually heavy fishing line or cord, is attached at one end to the edge of the tub and at the other to the upper end of the stick. The player may achieve limited variation in pitch by tensing the string at the upper end. The tub may be either right side up or inverted (Bethel 44). = BASS, BASS DRUM, WASH-TUB BASS cf.
