fire-dance

n. an African-style RING DANCE in which performers (formerly naked) leap over burning coals (Bethel 1978: 124, 127); it was a frequent but forbidden public spectacle in the early 1900's, but is now considered a night-club act for tourists:1891 A form of open air dancing . . .called a "fire dance". . .no doubt a relic of their previous savage life (Stark 188). 1934 The forbidden fire dance (Bell 85).
