galley

n. 1. [cf. OED, a ship's cooking range] a wooden box filled with sand on which a fire for cooking is made (usually on a boat): 1977 (Albury 21). The cook on the boat used to use a galley on the deck (Andros). = CABOOSE 1, FIRE HEARTH, TRIBBET 2, GALLERY 1 (Gen.)

2. [Atlantic; also US Black (Faucet 1927:268)] any cooking place: 1977 Galley. . as the fire­place [of the house] was called (Albury 11).
