gooseberry (tree)

[unrelated to US or Brit. goose­berry; from the supposed resemblance of the fruit] n. a tree, Phyllanthus acidus or P. distichus: 1827 The gooseberry tree is very pretty; the fruit grows in clusters, is almost white, and looks like beautiful wax work; it is used only for sweet meats (Culmer 32). 1978 Native gooseberry jam (Higgs 148).
