Yes Kelvin there is a difference in quailty and prices. Not only between brands but between labels owned by the same company. Often the choice is limited by location with not all brands represented. Are there any that I would avoid? No not really. You have match the feed price and resulting pig peformance to get the best match from the brands available to you.Think of it this way. You should be looking for a feed conversion ratio of around 2.5 to make serious money. So to get to 100kg, the pig eats 250kg of feed. Regardless of growth rate, pigs eat every day. So they need to grow quickly to limit the feed. That will mean higher protein levels and more animal protein than vegetable, higher priced feed. But it isnt that simple, the breed of pig plays a part as well as does the point where you stop feeding to appetite and start feeding to diet. What can you supplement the feed with to limit cost and to boost dietary values? Are you growing the pigs for meat or to breed? What body score and backfat level does your customer prefer?Sorry Mate, no easy answer. As advice, start with the cheapest range of feed you can get and build from that.
