Obs. 1. former name of the Bahamas: 1601 They dressed a ship to cross the windward gulf to the islands of the Lucayos (account of Ponce de Leon's 1513 voyage: quoted by Craton 1962: 42), 1670 The Bahama Islands, or the Islands of the Lucayos (quoted by Hassam 1899:11). 1895 Lucayas or Bahama Islands (Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia, quoted by Curry 1928:20). cf.
